Geekeasy Open House – Thursday October 6th at 6:30 PM

Thank your for your interest in and patience with Geekeasy.org while we get this community space off the ground.

We’re pleased to announce that we’ve got the first stage of our renovation very near complete and are preparing to pick the first companies to occupy the space while we complete phase two of the renovation.

We wanted to invite you to come meet our team and each other and learn how to get involved with Geekeasy from the ground up.  We’re going to explain how we’re ramping Geekeasy up, what it costs to get in, and how you can lock in your status (and pricing) as an innagural member.

You can RSVP here on Facebook:

This won’t be your last chance to come and experience Geekeasy, but it is a big night for us so I wanted to make sure you knew it was happening.

We have been really inspired by the outpouring of support and I apologize that I haven’t been able to get back to each one of you individually.  We are looking for help on the operations and community development side of the house, so let me know if you’re interested in being a Geekeasy leader and help fill that need.

I apologize you’re getting this notice so late, but we oringally only invited the people that expressed an interest in the offices and only decided to open it up to the whole group at the last minute.

Hope you can make it out tommorow or to one of our future events.  When we get a little further along we’ll be open for drop ins, but for now we recommend coming to one of the open house or scheduling an appointment directly with myself or my partner in Geekdom, Chris MacDonald of Huge Fan.

Please pass this invite on to people you think would be interested and thank you again for your support and enthusiasm for Geekeasy.

Sincerely,
Jamey Harvey

P.S. We’re expecting a Post reporter at the event tommorow, so please be fascinating and quirky if that’s how you are.

Lean Incubation…

Its been an exciting week here at Geekeasy.  We began work today on the buildout of the space.  We’re picking colors for carpet and walls.  Some early members have begun to stop by and work out of the space.  We’re learning the ins and the outs of the space.

So far our biggest problem is that suddenly, AT&T decided to declare Geekeasy a no calling zone which has made facilitating visotors really, really challenging.

I was talking to some friends about how we’re going to make this work and they said: “you’re running it just like a lean startup.”

That’s exactly right.  We’re getting the minimum viable product up and see how the market reacts.

We’re probably a good 45 days from getting the common room open, but I want to get our anchor tenants in for the offices right away, so: If you’re a social media or internet company and you want to be considered for one of the offices, please make sure you’ve got your information entered into the form at http://geekeasy.org, including that you’re interested in an office by this Friday, September 23rd.

I’ll be contacting you via email to let you know how we’re going to pick the first group of companies.

Video tour of Geekeasy and interior design thoughts..

Today I made a five minute video of the Geekeasy space for Sabrina Glass, who has wonderfully volunteered to act as our consulting interior designer.

Its a big longwinded, but it will give you an idea for how amazing the building is, what we’re planning on doing with it, and how badly I need a haircut.

Please feel free to tweet your suggestions to @jameyharvey or @spontoguy!

How to get involved with Geekeasy…

I am blown away (and maybe a little overwhelmed) by the outpouring of support, volunteers and community that responded to the launch of Geekeasy.

Wow…

The main question people have is: “How can I be a part of making this experiment work?”

So, here’s what I’m asking you to do:

1.) Fill out the form on the home page!  Tell us how you’d like to be involved.  We need some way to find you when we’re ready!

2.) Drop me an email at jamey.harvey@gmail.com if you want to come by and see the space.

I will do my best to get back to you right away, but if I don’t, please be patient with me.  I have a startup to run too!

While you’re at it, please give our new facebook page a like

and feel free to message me at @jameyharvey or @spontoguy on twitter regarding Geekeasy.

Welcome to Geekeasy!

Well, its taken awhile, but we have the space, we have insurance and we’ve settled on a name that lights us up

I want to thank everybody who helped us get to this point.  I’m sure I’ll forget some people but for sure, we couldn’t have gotten this far without the support of Adam Rubinson, Peter Corbett, Jen Boss, Jessy Schingler, Robbie Schlingler, Bhavna Gandhi, Douglas and Norman Jemal, Marullus Williams, Victor Hoskins, Jonathan Aberman and the entire DC Business Technology Innovation Council.

This has truly been a grass roots community effort and an amazing example of what can happen when the private sector, non profits and local government work together for something worth doing.

Its a realy privilage to get to lead this experiment for the community.  I am counting on you to spread the word to make this work.
